Rajasthan’s Desert Botanical Garden Opens in Jaisalmer

The Rajasthan government has inaugurated India’s first Desert Botanical Garden in Jaisalmer, a unique conservation project designed to preserve and display the diverse flora native to the Thar Desert. Spread over 150 acres, the garden showcases over 300 species of desert plants, including endangered and medicinal varieties. Designed with zero-water-waste principles, the garden uses drip irrigation and dew harvesting systems to sustain plant life. Interactive installations educate visitors about climate resilience, sand dune ecology, and traditional Rajasthani methods of plant preservation. Research labs attached to the site focus on studying heat-resistant crops and plant adaptations to arid conditions. The initiative also aims to support ecotourism in the region, offering guided trails, tribal art exhibitions, and local desert food experiences. By combining conservation with community engagement, the Desert Botanical Garden sets a precedent for ecological restoration in fragile ecosystems affected by desertification and climate change.
